Signus Magnolia made its first convention appearance! Writer and Signus Magnolia member Chad Anctil appeared at Rhode Island Comic Con, and promoted our books along with several other of his own works, including the first book in his series, Providence Supernatural Crime Unit (which I highly recommend)! A big thanks to Chad for helping spread the word about our publications!

Bewitched Whispers – An Anthology of Dark Folklore and Fairytales

October 14, 2025 –

Less than a month to go until our second release, Bewitched Whispers is released! Here is a look at the book’s cover.

I created it using four composite images I took with my phone while walking, and then drew in the “ghost” figure before applying filters to give everything in the image the same feel. It was created using Affinity Photo and FotoSketcher, both of which I highly recommend.

Michael Kellichner, one of our distinguished authors from Abandoned Altars and editor of our second anthology, met with Travis Bruce on his Horror Realm podcast. He discussed our Abandoned Altars anthology, his own writing and writing process, and our upcoming work. Another great interview that will give you a behind-the-scenes peek into how our last book came to be.

Our final round of proofreading is coming to a close, and we are now passing our works onto the wonderful Cliff Hansen for interior design for the print edition. I am also beginning work on the cover, a daunting yet exciting process. Hopefully, we will have a cover reveal available here soon.

In the meantime, here is my interview with Horror Realm’s Travis Bruce. We talked about how our group came about, our first book, and some of the challenges we faced. If you are interested in what we do, or in this kind of writing in general, this interview would definitely be worth your time.

Signus Magnolia’s second anthology is well on its way to fruition. Because I want this project to be as much of a true collaborative effort as possible, our group pitched different themes, and then voted on them in May. This new anthology will focus on dark fairy tales, including reimagined versions of famous fairy tales, as well as originals written in the style of fairy tales.

I’ve passed on editing duties to Michael Kellichner, who is in the process of reading and editing our submissions. During our summer break, I will be designing the cover, and Cliff Hansen will be hard at work drafting the interior design. The tentative release date is early October.

As we are a very small group with lots of competing interests among our members, we decided to limit ourselves to two publications each year, one in early October (just in time for Halloween), and one in early April. Taking this measured pace will hopefully ensure that we can keep our quality high.

Until then, take a look at our contributors pages to keep up with their latest work in other publications, and be sure to check back for more details as this project unfolds.

I am very happy to state that Abandoned Altars managed to crack the top ten bestselling list of New Releases for Horror Anthologies on April 27th! This list seems to update daily (if not more frequently!) so we bounce around on it, but it is a real pleasure seeing us listed so high, especially with our first release! Thank you to all who have purchased a copy, and please consider leaving a review!

PubShare got back to me, and said that the algorithm that processes Amazon Paperbacks submissions would likely reject our book design because it was recognizing some of our design elements outside of the margins as text. Fixing this problem is going to be a really laborious issue, because it basically affects every page, so rather than force Cliff to bust his butt over a weekend to meet an arbitrary deadline, I decided to push our publishing date back a month.

It would be easy to be bummed by this, but I actually see it as a positive: Cliff is doing something really cool and unconventional, and the lazy AI that Amazon uses to approve book designs saw it and said “This isn’t something I’ve ever seen before, therefore it must be a mistake.” I have full faith in his abilities, and know that you will feel the same when you see it.

Our first release, Abandoned Altars, is scheduled to be released on April 25th! Here is a look at the cover (click for full resolution):

People sacrifice so much for their beliefs (religious and other).  But what happens when these beliefs are pushed to the side?  What happens when someone walks away from something that once dominated his or her life?  What consequences do we face for such actions? Within these pages, the reader is forced to bear witness to the terrifying consequences of such choices, each presented masterfully by our talented writers from around the world.

Abandoned Altars features nine stories by our contributors, as well as fantastic artwork and interior layout by Cliff Hansen. It will be available through Amazon as a paperback and Kindle release, as well as through Apple Books, Kobo, Nook, and PubShare.
